How MariaDB versioning, EOL & security support work

MariaDB uses a three-part a.b.c version number where the major number identifies the yearly release series, the minor number marks a functionality level that grows quarterly, and the patch number marks a maturity level that grows with bug-fix releases. Within each major series, the release carrying the highest minor number is designated that series' Long-Term Support (LTS) branch. Patch releases contain only security issues and bug fixes, never new functionality.

Actively maintained

A release series is in full maintenance while within its published support window, receiving regular patch releases that roll up security fixes and bug fixes.

Security support only (Extended Support)

MariaDB's policy describes an Extended Support tier continuing past standard Community maintenance, delivering critical and security fixes in source form for a further period. Enterprise offerings layer on longer options for organizations that need to stay on an older series.

End of life

Each release has a published end-of-life date after which the Foundation stops issuing patch releases. The Foundation describes these dates as public policy guidance rather than a legally binding commitment.

Security issues in MariaDB are coordinated through the MariaDB Foundation's security process and, once fixed, shipped specifically as patch releases, the release type its policy reserves for security and bug fixes. Once a series' maintenance window closes, those patch releases stop arriving, leaving known, publicly disclosed vulnerabilities unfixed on that install.
