How Microsoft SQL Server versioning, EOL & security support work

SQL Server releases are versioned as year-named editions (SQL Server 2019, 2022) with an internal build number underneath, governed by Microsoft's company-wide Fixed Lifecycle Policy. That policy splits support into two sequential, pre-published phases counted from general availability: Mainstream Support followed by Extended Support, with fixed dates set in advance rather than usage-based triggers.

Actively maintained (Mainstream Support)

A version receives the full range of updates: functional and design changes, performance and scalability improvements, security updates, and complimentary standard technical support.

Security support only (Extended Support)

Once Mainstream Support ends, an eligible version moves into Extended Support, receiving security updates only. Non-security hotfixes require a separate paid agreement, and no new features are accepted.

End of life (with optional Extended Security Updates)

After Extended Support ends, the version stops receiving updates through normal channels. For some releases Microsoft separately sells a paid Extended Security Updates (ESU) program that continues critical security patches, but this is a distinct add-on, not standard lifecycle support.

Microsoft discloses and patches SQL Server vulnerabilities through the Microsoft Security Response Center (MSRC), which assigns CVEs and coordinates fixes on a regular monthly security update cycle. Because Extended Support covers only security fixes and support stops entirely afterward unless separately enrolled in ESU, an EOL SQL Server instance outside of ESU will not receive patches for newly disclosed CVEs.
