How Prometheus versioning, EOL & security support work

Prometheus uses major.minor.patch versioning and ships a new minor release roughly every six weeks, with patch releases filling in as needed. Ordinary minor releases only get bug fixes during that short window before the next minor takes over; a small number of minor releases are additionally designated Long-Term Support (LTS), getting a substantially extended window of bug, security, and documentation backports instead of new features.

Actively maintained (current minor / active LTS lines)

The latest minor release is in active development and gets bug fixes until the next minor ships about six weeks later. Any release marked LTS continues receiving bug, security, and documentation fixes for its full LTS window.

Security support only, LTS releases only

Regular, non-LTS minors go straight from active to unsupported once the next minor ships. Only releases explicitly designated LTS get a longer maintenance-only phase, where fixes are backported without adding features.

End of life

A regular minor release reaches end of life as soon as it's superseded, since Prometheus doesn't commit to backporting fixes to non-LTS branches. An LTS release reaches end of life once its LTS window closes.

Prometheus publishes security fixes and advisories through its GitHub repository, following coordinated disclosure as is standard for CNCF projects. Because only the current minor and any active LTS lines get backported fixes, running an older, non-LTS version means a newly discovered vulnerability won't be patched for that version.
