How Red Hat Enterprise Linux versioning, EOL & security support work

RHEL major and minor versions (expressed as major.minor, such as 10.2) each move through a defined, multi-phase lifecycle set out in Red Hat's update and errata policy. Red Hat issues errata (RHSA for security, RHBA for bug fixes, RHEA for enhancements) applied cumulatively to the latest release, and minor releases periodically refresh hardware enablement and installation media.

Full Support Phase

A newly released RHEL version starts here. Red Hat ships errata for defects and security issues meeting standard criteria, delivers minor releases with refreshed hardware enablement, and includes select software enhancements.

Maintenance Support Phase

Qualifying bug fixes and security fixes continue, but Red Hat stops adding new functionality or native hardware enablement; new hardware is typically supported only via virtualized deployment at this stage.

Extended Life Phase

Red Hat no longer produces bug fixes, security fixes, hardware enablement, or root-cause analysis for the release. Customers retain access to previously published content, but the version is no longer actively maintained.

Red Hat handles vulnerabilities through its own security response process, publishing RHSA errata for issues meeting defined severity criteria. Once a RHEL version reaches the Extended Life Phase, no further bug or security fixes are produced for it, so continuing to run it leaves systems exposed to unpatched vulnerabilities unless it's on an add-on extended-support subscription.
