How Ubuntu versioning, EOL & security support work

Ubuntu uses date-based versioning in the form YY.MM (year and month of release), with new releases every six months in April and October. Every two years one of those releases is designated Long Term Support (LTS), while the releases in between are short-lived interim releases with a much shorter free support window. Canonical builds Ubuntu Pro around extending security coverage for LTS releases well beyond the free baseline.

Actively maintained (standard free support)

For LTS releases this is Canonical's standard, no-cost maintenance window, during which the Main and Universe repositories get routine security patches, bug fixes, and updates. Interim releases get a much shorter free support window.

Security support only (Extended Security Maintenance / Ubuntu Pro)

Once an LTS release's standard free window ends, Canonical can keep issuing security-only patches for a longer period through Ubuntu Pro's Extended Security Maintenance (ESM). No new features or non-security bug fixes are included in this phase.

End of life

Once a release passes the end of its standard window, and any ESM coverage it's enrolled in, Canonical stops shipping any updates, security or otherwise, for that release.

Ubuntu vulnerabilities are tracked and patched by Canonical's security team, published as USNs (Ubuntu Security Notices) for releases still supported. Once a release reaches end of life, it stops receiving USN-driven patches entirely, so running an EOL Ubuntu version means known CVEs go unfixed unless the system is enrolled in Extended Security Maintenance.
